Making a Difference with Fair Trade —Mizak, Haiti
Haiti is a country that occupies the Western third of the caribbean Island of Hispaniola, sharing a border with the Dominican Republic. The population is estimated to be 8.49 million people. Haiti's economic, political, social difficulties, and natural disasters have anguished haiti with chronic poverty.
This year, Spes Nova New Hope had the amazing opportunity of partnering with Haitian artisans in fair trade. We designed cards and sent the materials over to Haiti where the artisans were able to assmble them; paying them a wage of three dollars per card. Being able to make a positive impact in the lives of these people is a warming experience that we hope to continue over the course of the following year and years to come.
After we recieved the cards, we then had a pop- up shop where we sold many of the cards, while also raising awareness and support for fair trade. We have hopes of taking it a step further, and pushing for our campus to become fair trade ceriftified so that we may continue in making a differnce in the lives of others.
