The Essence of Fair Trade

Introduction

Fair trade is important because it allows everyday people to play a meaningful role in promoting positive change in the world and help create a more just and sustainable global economy through trust and respect. In this post, we’ll define fair trade and the principles followed, some fair trade products and what the difference between Fair Trade products and Organic, show a few companies that use and promote fair trade products, and provide the 10 principles fair trade must follow.

What is Fair Trade and what principles does it follow?

Fair Trade is a social movement and market-based approach aimed at promoting equitable trading partnerships between producers in developing countries and consumers in developed countries. Incase the above picture is not legible the 10 principles Fair Trade follows are: Creating Opportunities for Economically Disadvantaged Producers, Transparency and Accountability, Fair Trading Practices, Fair Payment, Ensuring no Child Labor and Forced Labor, Commitment to Non Discrimination,Gender Equity and Women’s Economic Empowerment and Freedom of Association, Ensuring Good Working Conditions,Providing Capacity Building, Promoting Fair Trade, Respect for the Environment. The WFTO does their day to day work on top of monitoring so that the principles are held to the standards they should be at.

For further information on the above principles take a look at the link attached below.

What Are Some Fair Trade Products? What is the difference between Fair Trade products and Organic?

The products that are currently traded as Fair trade products are mainly foods and beverages such as bananas, honey, coffee, oranges, Cocoa bean, cocoa, dried and fresh fruits and vegetables, juices, nuts and oil seeds, quinoa(a flowering plant used for its edible seeds), rice, spices, sugar, tea and wine. These products prohibit several hazardous materials and GMO.

Fair trade and organic products are pretty much similar. The main real difference between organic and fair trade products are the standards set on them. Organic products set standards on natural resources and agricultural practices, where a fair trade sets standards on the relationship between the people and trade.
