What’s Fair Trade & Who is Levantate Mujer?
What is Fair Trade and why does it matter?
Fair Trade is a trading partnership, based on dialogue, transparency and respect, that seeks greater equity in international trade. It contributes to sustainable development by offering better trading conditions to, and securing the rights of, marginalized producers and workers.
Everyone benefits when workers and farmers are treated equally. Fair trade gives consumers the assurance that the people who create the things they purchase receive a fair reward for their labor while assisting businesses in finding goods that are produced ethically and environmentally.
Who are we and why are we writing this blog?
I am Vera, I have always been interested in helping people and knowing the fact of how lucky we are. When I heard about this class on Fair Trade in which we would do business with people who need help and do not have many connections in order to expand their business, I knew I wanted to participate. I believe that Fair Trade can develop the global market to a better place and opportunity for everyone, no matter from what country you are.
I am Alba, I always wonder how I could help more people and working on this project made me realize how grateful I should be and how lucky I am. When I first heard about the Fair Trade class I didn’t really know what it was about, I did some research about it and I thought that I could be a really good class to help people while I get my degree and I learn more about how to create a business. Fair trade can change the world, it can give the opportunity to develop third world countries.
My name is Joel. It is a great feeling when you help people, and even more when you know that you are making them grow as individuals and families. This Fair Trade class teaches us and gives us an opportunity to help those individuals who need that little help. Thanks to our economical advantages we can help and that's how we start making a difference.
Bolivian Artisans & Our Custom FT Products
This semester we are partnering with Tejido Mazo Cruz, a group of women from Bolivia that manufactures a variety of closing designs made by hand. Because they are from an impoverished village and developed this little business to support their families, they are very inspiring. Their objective is to promote their community, the economy, and the independence of women entrepreneurs. Here's a link from a non profit organization that works closely with Tejido Mazo Cruz and its helping women to become independent and strong: https://www.levantatemujer.org/. We worked with the artisans to create customized beanies for our college.
